GDPR and Generative AI
A Guide for Public Sector Organizations
GDPR and Generative AI – A Guide for the Public Sector
At Microsoft, we are delighted to announce the launch of our white paper, GDPR and Generative AI – A Guide for the Public Sector. This paper is aimed at empowering public sector organizations to harness the full potential of Microsoft’s generative AI solutions while complying with their obligations under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The paper provides an in-depth exploration of the key obligations under the GDPR, which public sector organizations need to consider when procuring generative AI services such as Copilot for Microsoft 365 and Azure OpenAI Service. It also includes information on the associated support and resources that Microsoft can offer, including in relation to transparency, data subject rights, processor obligations, technical and organizational security measures, DPIAs, and international transfers of personal data.
One of the key points raised in the paper is that the fundamental principles of GDPR apply in the same manner when procuring our generative AI solutions as they do for processing personal data in any other context such as cloud. So, while generative AI technology may be new, the principles and processes for risk assessment and compliance with GDPR remain the same. Microsoft’s existing privacy commitments, including those provided in Microsoft’s Data Protection Addendum, extend to our generative AI solutions. Public sector customers can rest assured that the privacy commitments they have long relied on when using Microsoft’s enterprise cloud products also apply to Microsoft’s generative AI solutions.
The launch of this paper is a significant step towards empowering public sector organizations to embrace the exciting opportunities presented by generative AI while ensuring compliance with their obligations under the GDPR. Microsoft’s commitment to Responsible AI development, along with its comprehensive support and resources, enables us to be a trusted partner for public sector organizations on their AI journey.
