South London Partnership innovates with Azure & the IoT to protect and better serve its residents

The South London Partnership (SLP) is a sub-regional collaboration of five London boroughs: Croydon, Kingston upon Thames, Merton, Richmond upon Thames and Sutton. With a combined population of 1.2 million people, the borough is home to 60,000 active businesses and supports 500,000 jobs.

“South London Partnership is ambitious for our future and the opportunities we can develop and offer,” states Andrew Parsons, IoT Programme Manager – Digital & IT Service at the London Borough of Kingston and Sutton.

“By being able to see all this information together in one place, you can get a definitive answer in order to help people quickly and effectively.”

Working together to drive improvements for residents

In particular, SLP was keen to understand how digital technologies and the Internet of Things (IoT) could help it to enhance its services for the benefit of the five boroughs’ residents.

“How can we use technology to improve the day-to-day lives of residents in the five boroughs of South West London?” asks Rebekah Brown, IoT Project Delivery Manager, Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. “It’s seeing how small things can lead to big changes.”

SLP began working with Microsoft to explore the potential of IoT and to develop a universal data platform on Microsoft Azure that would stand as the backbone for all the partnership’s data, analytics and insights innovations.

Exploring the myriad of exciting use cases

Data and insights have huge potential to transform the operations and opportunities in the area. The work to date has encompassed a vast array of diverse use cases that are each delivering tangible benefits for the five boroughs and their residents.

These include:
•IoT sensors to monitor the movements of selected at-risk residents – a project which the team estimates has already saved four lives.
•IoT sensors to monitor the flow of water in selected gullies and culverts, especially those with a history of frequent flooding, so that remedial and safeguarding actions can be taken quickly and proactively – helping to protect people and property.
•IoT sensors to monitor air quality in over 440 locations. This data can be cross-referenced with footfall and traffic data to understand both risk and contributing factors.

Data is stored in Microsoft Azure before being made available to the relevant teams via Microsoft Power BI dashboards and reports or for further analysis.

Innovating with data to make a positive difference

“IoT helps to enable our physical world connecting to our digital world,” explains Pierre Venter, Digital Connectivity and Infrastructure Project Manager at the Digital & IT Service for Kingston and Sutton. “It’s about collecting new forms of data that can bring new insights into how our environment can be better improved.”

The scope and ambition of the project has helped to drive success across the organisation. Andy Parsons says, “It’s that ability to look at the different bits of data that’s really, really important.”

SLP also benefits from the security of the Microsoft Azure platform and associated security tools. Andy Parsons confirms, “One of the key factors of the Microsoft Azure platform is its security standards.

Using analytics and insights for good

The potential to improve the quality of life for residents while simultaneously driving efficiencies through operations is exciting. Rebekah Brown says, “By being able to see all this information together in one place, you can get a definitive answer in order to help people quickly and effectively.”

She continues, “Data drives our knowledge and by having that knowledge we can take away the fear and actually combat things.”

Andrew Parsons adds, “Working with Microsoft has been absolutely fantastic. They have genuinely got what we’re trying to achieve, so it’s just magic.”
